Protecting our communities from the risk of suicide

Garry Sims APM - R U OK? Community Ambassador reminds us that on average in Australia, eight people die daily from suicide. Six of these are men. Three thousand and forty-six deaths by suicide were recorded in 2018 (latest figures) which was more than two and a half times that of the national road toll in the same year. Suicide is the leading cause of death of Australians aged 15 – 44 with our Aboriginal people figuring higher than non-Indigenous people.

Suicide and intentional self-harm are complex and can have multiple contributing factors, yet with timely and appropriate interventions they may be preventable.

Each time I wear this blue band, I will remember those lost to suicide and remind myself that we all have a role to play to make our communities better protected from the risk of suicide. A conversation can change a life – take the time to ask R U OK? to anyone that you think is struggling with life.
